About the Role
~1 min readThe Baltimore Banner is seeking a versatile, ambitious reporter to join its regional team and cover Anne Arundel County. The Banner’s regional team is essential to the growth of our audience and the sustainability of our nonprofit newsroom.
Maryland’s fourth-most populous county is home to more than 500 miles of shoreline, a growing population and Annapolis, the state capital. It’s fertile ground for storytelling and deep reporting. This is a role for a journalist who can break news with authority, analyze trends and connect with the people who call Anne Arundel County home. You will produce stories that inform, entertain and resonate with readers, while helping bring in subscribers.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Cover every aspect of Anne Arundel County, from its many coves and creeks to the commercial core bracketed by BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport and Fort Meade, home to the National Security Agency, with a particular emphasis on county government, public safety, development and other issues that matter to residents.
- →Spend time digging into the issues that shape the daily lives of Anne Arundel County residents, such as housing, land use and health, to produce compelling daily and enterprise stories, features and investigations.
- →Collaborate with a beat partner on the regional team to develop strategies for meaningful and comprehensive coverage.
- →Monitor the news in Anne Arundel County and develop community sourcing to always have a pulse on what’s happening.
- →Collaborate with other teams at The Banner, including the visuals, data and audience teams, to tell stories in exciting ways and maximize audience reach and impact.
- 5 years of professional journalism experience in a daily newsroom.
- The ability to write clearly and make complex topics compelling and accessible.
- A proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while maintaining meticulous accuracy.
- Strong news judgment and a keen sense of what readers want.
- Collaboration, adaptability and enthusiasm for working with teams across the newsroom.
- Comfort with working nights and weekends as needed.
- Strategic thinking, strong organization, and excellent planning and time-management skills.
- Understanding of how to use data, social media and SEO to grow digital audiences.
- Data reporting skills, fluency in other languages and other specialty skills are a plus.
- A commitment to journalistic integrity, ethics and audience trust.
