Residential Life

The Community Director is a full time, 12 month, live- in professional, student facing position providing leadership and oversight for a residential area in the UMBC residential system. This position is a full time, 12 month live in professional staff position  This position leads community building, programming and student success under the leadership of the Residential Life Department.

Reporting directly to an Assistant Director for Residential Education, the Community Director (CD) supports the residential experience by providing comprehensive management of 1-2 residence halls, or multiple apartments units that houses approximately 300-600 residents and supervises 8-20 Resident Assistants (RA). Primary duties and responsibilities involve: community development, residential engagement, and student learning; building administration and operations; supervision and management; student success and leadership development; crisis management and student support; as well as organizational leadership. This role is required to live in assigned residential space as a condition of employment and serves in a 24/7 on-call duty rotation. 

UMBC offers competitive compensation.  This role starts at $48,000 and has over 4 weeks of vacation for regular full time roles. Tuition remission is also available.

• Accurately implement established occupancy & facilities management processes as prescribed. This includes but is not limited to openings and closings; roster verification audits; facilitation of administrative room relocations, resident check-ins and check-outs; health and safety inspections, room readiness, and maintenance reporting. 
• Ethically manage building/community programming budgets, complete monthly budget reconciliations ensuring accuracy and that all items necessary for accounting are received for processing in a timely manner. 
• Maintain consistent communication with residential life staff regarding student and community issues and needs; and provide timely follow up to residential life staff, students, parents, etc.  
• Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate student staff (e.g., Resident Assistants, Desk Assistant, Office Assistant etc).
• Support the residential experience in the assigned community through appropriate and accurate use of software and systems for building operations, student support, engagement, and programming (StarRez, Advocate, PeopleSoft, Google Suite, Office 365 Canva, etc.). 
• Cultivate and maintain an inclusive residential community experience that is aligned with departmental learning outcomes.
• Create and implement a community engagement plan that includes intentional community-building strategies that promote belonging, civic engagement, and personal growth.
• Directly advise community councils (CC) for assigned building/community. 
• Promote the efforts of department-sponsored student leadership groups: Resident Student Association (RSA) and National Residence Hall Honorarium (NRHH). 
• Service in the Community Director On-call duty rotation, which responds and supports triaging crisis situations including mental health and medical concerns, facility emergencies, behavioral incidents, and community disruptions.
• Attend and actively engage within departmental, meetings, retreats, and development offerings.
• Embody the Division of Student Affairs Commitments in daily work, relationships, and decision-making. 
• Performs other duties as assigned. 

• Bachelor’s Required
• Prior live-in residential life experience
• Demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence 
• Experience working with diverse student populations and active work towards the creation of an inclusive community 
• Ability to consistently manage multiple simultaneous priorities in a high-energy environment requiring 
• Experience working non-traditional work hours within Residence Life as well as maintaining a presence in the community
• Experience serving in an on-call duty rotation  

• Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel Services, Counseling, or a related area strongly preferred
• Previous full-time or graduate residence life experience 
• Experience with a residential curriculum or restorative practice

Salary: $48,000 - $54,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.
