The Center for Global Engagement facilitates education abroad, immigration services, intensive English instruction, international partnerships and related functions that empower UMBC to extend beyond borders. 

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Vice Provost for Global Engagement, the Director is responsible for the creation, delivery and evaluation of high-impact international programs that provide the campus community with access to global learning and engagement opportunities.

Responsibilities:

As a key member of the Center for Global Engagement’s leadership team, the Director will work collaboratively with campus and external partners to expand access to study abroad and international exchange programs, international research and service-learning opportunities as well as Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) and virtual exchanges. The Director ensures compliance with institutional policies, federal laws and foreign regulations impacting education abroad programs. The Director manages education abroad applications, program proposals, scholarships and helps manage risk. The Director supervises a team of dedicated staff and student employees. Duties include: 

  • Provide leadership and direction to the Education Abroad and Global Learning team, including supervising staff, assessing and improving processes, developing and executing strategies to increase participation in education abroad programs, planning activities and events, managing budgets, enforcing policies and procedures, managing technology and operations.
  • Partner effectively with campus leadership, departments, faculty and external stakeholders (e.g., program providers and international universities) to develop and manage education abroad and global learning opportunities, including year-long and semester exchange programs, customized short-term programs, Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) programs and orientation programs.
  • Oversee development, execution and evaluation of customized short-term and faculty-directed international programs in accordance with university policies and procedures; this includes generating interest through outreach to individual faculty and academic departments, developing programs in collaboration with faculty and academic leaders, overseeing program budgets, liaising with relevant UMBC committees and external partners, executing program applications, selecting participants, preparing faculty directors, and evaluating programs.
  • Oversee international academic and credit evaluation processes. This includes working with faculty to integrate education abroad within the curriculum, assisting students to obtain credit approvals prior to departure, evaluating international transcripts for transfer equivalencies, and ensuring that required documentation is submitted to the UMBC Registrar in a timely manner to effectively transfer international credits to students' academic records.
  • Maintain knowledge of financial aid regulations as they pertain to education abroad and collaborate with the Vice Provost to identify and develop scholarship, grant and other funding opportunities in support of education abroad and global learning. Educate the campus community on additional funding opportunities, including Boren, CLS, DAAD, ERASMUS+, Fulbright and Gilman.
  • Serve on campus, regional and national committees that have a significant impact on education abroad and global learning.
  • Assist the Vice Provost with assessing and managing health, safety, security and financial risks associated with education abroad programs. This includes ensuring program participants are enrolled in UMBC’s international travel registry and insurance policies, serving as a responder in case of emergencies and liaising with on-campus, domestic, and international entities to develop and execute emergency response protocols.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of international travel and entry requirements (e.g., passports, visas and stay permits) as pertain to locations in which UMBC education abroad programs operate.
  • Assist the Vice Provost with special projects, strategic initiatives and reporting requirements.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree 
  • 5 years of related professional work experience within the field of education abroad. 
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Additional years of related professional work experience within the field of education abroad. 
  • Experience studying, working, or living abroad.

Salary:

Salary: $96,500 - $109,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
