Position Summary
The Environmental Compliance Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and ensuring full compliance with all federal, state, and permit-specific environmental requirements at the Rosebud Mine. This position provides leadership and technical direction for environmental programs including mine permitting, reclamation compliance, bond release activities, water management, air quality, and regulatory reporting. The superintendent serves as the primary point of contact with regulatory agencies, including the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Office of Surface Mining and Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) and works closely with mine operations, engineering, reclamation, and corporate teams to integrate environmental compliance into daily mine activities. The role requires proactive identification and resolution of compliance issues, effective management of inspections and audits, and strategic planning to support ongoing operations, reclamation progress, and long-term closure objectives.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position will have supervisory responsibilities over other employees.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Conducts tests, audits, or inspections of organizational processes or facilities and reports findings to the executive team.
· Coordinates the collection and analysis of environmental samples, assists in the interpretation of findings, and develops and implements corrective actions.
· Investigates allegations of illegal, improper, or unethical conduct by employees or company representatives.
· Develops and delivers environmental compliance-related training sessions.
· Performs complex tasks typically following established processes. Leads and directs the work of other employees and has full authority for personnel decisions
· Primarily focused on administering established policies and procedures but may have some impact on departmental budgeting, strategic planning, and procedural change
· Perform related work as required.
Education and Experience
· Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Environmental Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field is required.
· Minimum 5 years’ experience in coal/mining, electrical utility, coal/mining transportation, construction, or related industry with some commercial experience is desired.
· Computer and analytical skills are necessary. Proficient in Microsoft Office.
· Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Licenses, Registration, and Certifications
Pre-employment drug screening and personal & criminal backgrounds checks will be conducted on all candidates that receive a conditional offer. Successful applicant must possess a valid driver’s license through the duration of employment. Successful applicant must meet all insurability requirements as specified by Westmoreland’s policies or Driver’s insurance provider.

Typical Physical Demands
Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires constant data input for extended periods of time without leaving the work area. Occasionally lifting files or paper weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports.
Typical Working Conditions
Normal office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work. Traveling up to 15% of time.
