Principal Engineer - Customer Solutions & Group Operations

• Location: Sydney or Melbourne Based
• Hybrid Working 

We’re seeking a Principal Engineer to act as the senior‑most technical authority across Customer Solutions & Group Operations (CSGO) with our Data Platforms (DP) area within Westpac. 

You’ll own end‑to‑end technical design and quality across enterprise batch and streaming data platforms, set engineering standards, mentor senior technologists, and act as the escalation point for complex, cross‑domain data challenges in a regulated environment.

Please note that this is a hands‑on, senior individual contributor role — i.e. not a people manager or delivery manager position, however your highly developed stakeholder management and people influencing ability will be key to the role’s success - complemented with your deep technical engineering skills and expertise. 

• →Own and govern end‑to‑end data solutions across batch and real‑time streaming pipelines
• →Define and assure architecture aligned to enterprise standards, security, risk and regulatory controls
• →Design scalable solutions using Azure data platforms (ADLS, Synapse Spark/SQL, Event Hubs, Cosmos DB)
• →Lead event‑driven and real‑time architectures (Kafka, Event Hubs, APIs; lambda/kappa patterns)
• →Set and enforce standards across design, data modelling, code quality, CI/CD and DevSecOps
• →Act as the technical escalation point for complex data integrity, reconciliation and performance issues
• →Mentor senior engineers and uplift capability through design reviews and reusable patterns
• →Apply Agentic AI and engineering copilots safely to accelerate delivery in regulated environments

• 10+ years’ experience in data engineering, solution engineering or data architecture within large, complex environments
• Proven delivery of enterprise‑scale data and reporting platforms (regulated or financial services environments preferred)
• Strong hands‑on expertise in streaming and real‑time data architectures, Azure data ecosystems, SQL, data modelling and performance optimisation, enterprise data platforms (e.g. Teradata / Snowflake), and ETL / ELT tooling (e.g. Informatica)
• Strong architectural judgement balancing batch + streaming for analytics and reporting
