The Emergency Medicine Registrar plays a key role in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED). The post requires strong clinical acumen, the ability to manage a broad range of acute conditions, and to work efficiently as part of a multidisciplinary team under the supervision of Emergency Medicine Consultants.
Responsibilities
~1 min readPerform initial assessment, investigation, and management of patients presenting with acute medical, surgical, trauma, paediatric, and psychiatric emergencies.
Prioritise cases based on triage, clinical urgency, and departmental capacity.
Resuscitate and stabilise critically ill or injured patients in line with Advanced Life Support principles (e.g., ACLS, ATLS, PALS).
Liaise with specialty teams for referrals, admissions, or further patient management.
Participate in major incident responses and provide input in clinical decision-making.
Ensure complete, accurate, and timely documentation of patient records, prescriptions, and discharge summaries.
Attend daily handover meetings, clinical ward rounds, and case reviews.
Contribute to maintaining patient flow and departmental efficiency.
Engage with clinical governance, infection prevention and control, and quality improvement initiatives.
Supervise and support junior doctors, interns, and medical students within the department.
Participate in regular departmental teaching sessions, simulation training, and multidisciplinary team education.
Maintain and update a personal portfolio, logbook, and continuous professional development (CPD) credits.
Attend national or international courses relevant to Emergency Medicine (e.g., ACLS, ATLS, APLS).
Participate in or lead clinical audits, research projects, and morbidity & mortality reviews.
Support evidence-based practice and clinical guideline development.
