Schedule Details/Additional Information:

This candidate is responsible for the planning, coordination, and direction of Transfusion Services for two (2) sites, at IL Masonic Medical Center and Trinity hospital. Candidate must be able to work at the company's physical location fulltime at both sites. Candidate will be required to work some weekends, and off shifts (2nd and 3rd shifts) to support teammate training, competencies, regulatory audit preparation, etc... when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Provides site leadership, planning, direction, and coordination of Transfusion Services. Ensures timely, accurate, cost effective and high-quality service at all times.
  • Works with system and site teams to develop, implement and evaluate results of an annual continuous quality improvement plan. Takes corrective action as needed regarding quality improvement indicators. Supports teammates in providing quality care by ensuring adherence to established standards of care, policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Maintains laboratory policies and procedures by being involved in procedure review, assignment to staff, and monitoring of reader tasks for responsible sites.
  • Monitors LIS and HIS data to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulatory requirements. 
  • Maintains / monitors adherence to section quality control programs to ensure that test results are precise, accurate, and timely. Documents problems and corrective actions. In conjunction with the Transfusion Medical Director, ensures that quality control programs are compliant with regulatory requirements.
  • Oversees the implementation and operation of equipment and instrument platforms. Reviews maintenance documentation and compliance with regulatory agencies. Monitors the troubleshooting of malfunctioning instrumentation and determination of appropriate back-up procedures.
  • Develops and educates team members, students, nursing staff and ancillary personnel regarding transfusion matters.
  • Establishes, maintains, assesses, and documents teammate competency assessment programs. Ensures that teammates receive adequate training to perform assigned testing responsibilities. With site leadership, designs and implements individual-specific development plans for laboratory teammates as needed.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with physicians, nurses, and other health care team members to ensure delivery of quality care. Participates actively in various forums to contribute to overall quality of care for the laboratory, hospital and / or off-site locations. Participates in hospital and system meetings as necessary or assigned.
  • On call responsibilities as determined by region.

License/Registration/Certification Required: Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist by ASCP or equivalent

Education Required: Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Technology or related field.

Experience Required: Typically requires three years of transfusion experience. MLS/Medical Technologist Specialty in Blood Banking and current assessor for AABB or CAP desired.

  • Maintains patient confidentiality in and out of the workplace.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include alternate site assignment.

Requirements

  • Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs. Will occasionally be required to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to sit, stand and walk for the majority of the workday.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, radioactive and/or infectious agents.
  • Will be exposed to human blood and body fluids.
  • Must wear appropriate lab coat, gloves, gowns and eye and face protection as needed.
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • May require travel, therefore may be exposed to inclement weather and adverse road conditions.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
