This position organizes, coordinates, and tracks the activities of the welding department for custom equipment and fabrication projects. In addition to welding tasks, this person is responsible for driving target completion times for jobs by communicating targets, monitoring progress, and helping remove obstacles. The welding lead will be responsible for most day-to-day activities from balancing time to reordering supplies.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all duties of Welding.

  • Attend and contribute to all project stand-up meetings on the shop floor working closely with other departments to identify and mitigate scheduling conflicts and resource conflicts.

  • Look ahead to verify/obtain all personnel, materials, equipment and consumables prior to start of a job.

  • Prioritize work through the area based on project requirements and schedule.

  • Assign appropriate personnel to tasks based on skill level, training, and work content to drive efficiency and hit project labor targets.

  • Review all jobs, including the shop traveler and all referenced documents prior to the assignment of the task and communicate necessary details to personnel performing the work.

  • Responsible for control of workmanship and quality of fabrication.

  • Ensure accuracy of capturing applied labor in the ERP system for all their team members.

  • Recommend and evaluate new equipment, tooling, and methods to improve efficiency, safety, and quality.

  • Reports equipment and tooling needs to manager in a timely manner or take steps to repair as appropriate.

  • Ensure machinery is both used and maintained in a safe manner per governmental regulations and company policies.

  • Responsible at times for plant start-up, shutdown and security.

  • Actively participate and support Lean initiative and foster a culture of continuous improvement while maintaining area of responsibility in an organized, safe, and clean condition.

  • Responsible for the safety of the employees under his/her direction as outlined in the Company Safety Manual and Hazardous Materials (as applicable), which includes but not limited to, training and monitoring workers in safe manufacturing and equipment operation practices.

  • Attend required training classes and other seminars.

  • Assesses employee skillsets, identifies gaps, and provides or obtains required job specific training as required.

  • Assists in completion of employee performance appraisals.

  • Participate in recruitment activities.

  • Orients new employees concerning policies and procedures, work rules, and individual position responsibilities and performance expectation levels.

  • Clearly communicates targets and expectations to employees and maintains an environment that motivates workers to achieve project and company goals.

  • Work closely with supervisor and other departments to efficiently coordinate resources to support project requirements and on-time completion of inspections.

  • Actively supports a culture of continuous improvement, accountability and safety.

  • 5-7 years of custom fabrication experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to manage conflict and hold team accountable

  • Complete understanding in the use of ATG’s work order/traveler documentation, material heat number tracing, weld maps, and Quality Management System

  • Demonstrated ability certify to ASME Sect. IX and AWS qualifications

  • Able to perform x-ray quality welds on products fabricated from stainless steel, carbon steel and specialty alloys using certified processes, i.e. GTAW, FCAW, LBW etc.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in reading engineering drawings and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), including identifying and measuring surface finishes

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills

  • Must be flexible in work hours in accordance with project schedules

  • Share off-hour shop supervisory responsibility of floor personnel with other leads as required.

  • Ability to work in team environment building custom equipment.

  • Willingness to standardize processes where applicable and train others in fabrication processes.

  • Understands project hours and project schedules.

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.

  • Ability to calculate and estimate allotted project hours and load personnel resources for department.

  • Ability to calculate and estimated equipment and consumable usage on a daily and project level.

  • Ability to interpret complex drawings and translate into a fabrication plan.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

  • The ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
