The Atlanta office of Barnes and Thornburg, LLP seeks an Associate with 2 to 5 years of civil tax controversy experience at a law firm, Big Four accounting firm, the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, or the U.S. Department of Justice.

Responsibilities

• Representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service (i.e., Examination, Appeals, and/or, the IRS Office of Chief Counsel)

• Reviewing and preparing legal documents related to tax controversy matters (e.g., penalty abatement requests, responses to audit Information Document Requests, protest letters, petitions, motions and other pleadings, discovery, and briefs)

• Managing projects and deadlines while working under the supervision of multiple attorneys

• Interacting with clients and managing client relationships

Qualifications

• Candidates should be able to correctly analyze complex tax topics and identify technical and practical solutions, deliver timely work product, and work comfortably in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, excellent time management skills, and strong technical abilities are required.

• Must possess a Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school. An LL.M. in Taxation and/or litigation experience before the U.S. Tax Court, U.S. District Courts, and/or the Court of Federal Claims is preferred.

• Bar admission, or eligibility to promptly obtain admission, in the jurisdiction of office location is required – This position is located in our Atlanta, Georgia office; however, consideration will be given to exceptionally qualified candidates who would work in any of Barnes & Thornburg’s twenty-six offices located throughout the United States.
