The Chrysos commitment and mission:
Here at Chrysos we combine science and software to create technology solutions that are changing the global mining industry; both from a productivity and environmental impact perspective.
Just like atoms and machines, we believe that everyone is different and how individuals come together is what makes us successful. Headquartered in Adelaide and with team members based in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Africa, Canada, Chile and North America, Chrysos Corporation’s diverse team of scientists, engineers and industry specialists are coming together to build technologies to provide rapid, accurate and safe ore analysis for the global mining industry.
The company’s flagship technology, PhotonAssay™, steps around centuries-old chemistry-based assay methods to deliver true ‘atom-counting’ analysis for the measurement of gold and other high-value metals. With successful global installations, Chrysos is taking PhotonAssay™ to customers around the world – Chrysos could take you to places that you might not have even imagined yet. There’s opportunity around every corner and the support to help you achieve your goals.
About the role:
Chrysos is seeking an experienced Accelerator Systems Engineer to contribute to the design and optimisation of a new electron linear accelerator (LINAC) platform.
This role will operate at both system architecture and component level, combining first-principles accelerator physics with practical engineering execution. The successful candidate will review and refine our current accelerator design, identify opportunities for optimisation, and help define the most effective technical and commercial pathways for subsystem development and supply.
The position requires deep practical knowledge of LINAC design, assembly, operation and troubleshooting, as well as strong familiarity with commercial suppliers and accelerator component ecosystems.
What you will do:
Component & Subsystem Engineering
- Lead or contribute to the design, specification and integration of key subsystems, including:
- Electron gun systems
- RF power systems (klystrons, magnetrons, solid-state amplifiers)
- Waveguide and coupling systems
- Accelerator structures
- Vacuum systems
- High-voltage systems
- Cooling systems
- Beam diagnostics and control systems
- Support prototype development, assembly, testing and commissioning activities.
- Diagnose and resolve technical issues during integration and operation.
Optimisation & Lifecycle Engineering
- Identify design changes to improve robustness, longevity and field serviceability.
- Evaluate design trade-offs between performance, cost, manufacturability and maintainability.
- Support root cause analysis of field issues and implement systematic design improvements.
- Contribute to reliability modelling and lifetime performance assessment.
Supply Strategy & Commercial Pathways
- Assess and recommend optimal supply pathways for accelerator components:
- In-house design and manufacture
- Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) procurement
- Custom design via commercial suppliers
- Develop technical specifications for external suppliers.
- Evaluate vendor capability, technical maturity and long-term supportability.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with key accelerator component suppliers.
System Architecture & Design
- Contribute to the end-to-end design of a new electron linear accelerator.
- Review existing accelerator architectures and identify improvements in:
- Beam performance and stability
- Reliability and uptime
- Serviceability and maintainability
- Component lifetime and total cost of ownership
- Develop system-level specifications and translate these into subsystem and component requirements.
- Perform beam dynamics, RF, vacuum, thermal, and mechanical integration assessments as required.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with mechanical, electrical and, software engineers.
- Contribute to design reviews, risk assessments and technical documentation.
- Support manufacturing, field service and operations teams with technical expertise.
- Provide mentoring and technical guidance to junior engineers.
- Contribute to a culture that values collaboration, technical excellence and on-going staff learning and development.
- Support the development of a strong OH&S culture.
Who you are:
Essential
- Degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline (PhD preferred but not essential).
- Significant hands-on experience with linear accelerators.
- Demonstrated experience in:
- Designing LINAC subsystems or full accelerator systems
- Assembling and commissioning accelerator systems
- Troubleshooting and operating LINACs in practical environments
- Strong working knowledge of RF systems, high-voltage systems, vacuum technology and beam physics.
- Experience working with accelerator component suppliers.
- Familiarity with reliability engineering and field-deployed systems is highly desirable.
Desirable
- Established professional relationships with suppliers of key accelerator components.
- Experience transitioning accelerator designs from prototype to production.
- Understanding of regulatory and radiation safety requirements.
- Strong systems-thinking capability with the ability to decompose complex accelerator systems into well-defined subsystems with clear interfaces, functional requirements and design constraints.
- Commercial awareness and ability to evaluate technical vs supply-chain trade-offs.
