JOB SUMMARY
The Shelving Clerk position is a part-time position that requires knowledge of professional practice and judgement in its application, as well as the application of prescribed procedures and methods. The Shelving Clerk performs library related tasks to inventory management and/or maintenance tasks under the guidance of the Adult Services Manager.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/FUNCTIONS
- Shelve library materials,
- Prepare and organize library materials for shelving.
- Read shelves.
- Clear tables of used material, organize them for reshelving.
- Answer basic questions from patrons, referring patrons with more involved questions to appropriate staff.
- Shelving projects as assigned by the Adult Services Manager.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Ability to alphabetize, learn and use library classification system.
- Ability to read shelves, and place materials in proper order.
- Ability to be accurate and pay strict attention to detail.
- Ability to meet the public in a courteous and professional manner and willingness to work as a team member with other library staff.
- Ability to successfully complete job responsibilities with minimum supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & PHYSICAL ABILITIES
- Physical Agility, strength and dexterity necessary for handling large numbers of library materials on a daily basis.
- Ability to reach all library shelves.
- Ability to safely reach, lift and carry library materials weighing up to 35 pounds.
- Ability to repetitively sit, bend, stoop, reach, stand, push, pull, and use a step stool as required to retrieve or shelve library materials in book stacks or book return, from ground level up to 7 feet.
- Ability to be accurate and pay strict attention to detail.
- Report to work on a regular and reliable basis.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with internet information retrieval are required.
- High School Diploma preferred.
- Public Library experience is preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Works in an office environment.
- May be required to work some overtime upon demand of workload.
- The Marion Public Library is a busy, customer focused library with a high amount of use by children and their parents. Patrons have high expectations regarding the quality and efficiency of library service.
- Evening and weekend work is required.
- The employee is expected to possess the cognitive ability essential for rational decision-making regarding operational needs and the problems of the position, as well as the psychological and emotional stability and capable of functioning and making decisions under high-stress situations. The employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace or citizens encountered during work.
