The Department of Art, Media, and Design at California State University San Marcos seeks a part-time lecturer for Fall 2026 to teach AMD 380-10: Graphic Design 2 – Intermediate Visual Communication Studio. This is an intermediate studio course that meets on Tuesdays from 9:00 to 11:50 a.m. 

The course builds upon foundational principles of visual communication and introduces students to more structured conceptual thinking, typographic systems, and multi-platform design applications. Students engage in research-driven design processes, iterative development, critique, and craft-based production while strengthening professional workflows and presentation skills. Emphasis is placed on developing cohesive visual systems across formats, understanding audience engagement, and refining design decisions for clarity, usability, and meaning. The course prepares students for upper-division studio work through increased rigor in methodology, production standards, and conceptual development. Course activities include lectures, demonstrations, screenings, discussions, critiques, weekly exercises, and project-based studio work.

Requirements

  • A master's degree in graphic design or closely related field
  • Current portfolio of graphic design or related work
  • Teaching experience at the college level or equivalent
  • Per the California State University’s Out-of-State Employment Policy, the CSU is prohibited from hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside California. Working in the State of California is a condition of employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach foundational-to-intermediate graphic design concepts, including typography (grid system), editorial design, and identity systems 
  • Commitment to inclusive pedagogy and experience working with diverse student populations 
  • Evidence of professional design practice and/or interdisciplinary visual communication work 
  • Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate intercultural competence and a commitment to serving our campus community as it relates to teaching and, as applicable, service.
  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $5,507 - $8,000 per full-time month

The salary schedule information for the Lecturer – Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:

  • CSU Classification Salary Range Lecturer A - AY: $5,507 - $6,677 per full-time month
  • CSU Classification Salary Range Lecturer B - AY: $6,221 - $13,224 per full-time month

The anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience.
