San Diego State University is seeking a skilled and knowledgeable Instructional Support Technician (IST) to join the School of Art and Design. Reporting to the School Director, the IST will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive instructional support for all shops and labs, including Ceramics, Furniture Design and Woodworking, and Jewelry and Metalwork.

Responsibilities

  • Inventory & Equipment Management: Manage procurement, inventory, maintenance, repair coordination, and operation of specialized equipment and materials across Ceramics, Furniture Design & Woodworking, and Jewelry & Metalwork programs.
  • Safety, Training & Studio Operations: Maintain safe instructional environments through proper equipment training, regular studio maintenance, student worker training, chemical storage, and hazardous waste handling and disposal.
  • Program Support: Support instructional activities, special events, and assist with equipment planning, requests, and replacements in collaboration with faculty and campus partners.
  • This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
  • This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

The School of Art and Design in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts is a creative learning community in which students develop their practice as artists, designers, and art historians who work in and across media while enhancing their visual, material, and conceptual thinking. Through both discipline-specific and multidisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning, we support students to innovate solutions, express ideas, imagine possibilities, and interpret the world through historical, cultural, and global contexts.

Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline, acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline.

or

Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a related discipline may be substituted for the experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts degree in Art, Design, or related field.
  • Experience working with machinery and equipment in shops/labs for Ceramics, Furniture Design and Woodworking, and Jewelry and Metalwork.
