PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a Department of Correction facility or district this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor and providing instruction for a group of inmates engaged in the manufacture, production or processing of products or services in the occupation indicated by the parenthetical title of the class.\r\n

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

\r\n\r\n Supervises and instructs inmates in proper methods and techniques of manufacturing process or service, proper use of tools and materials, necessary safety rules and procedures and maintenance, cleaning and repair of equipment;�\r\n Plans and routes work to be performed, assigning inmates to specific tasks;�\r\n Estimates needs and requisitions supplies, materials and equipment necessary;�\r\n Supervises maintenance and/or repair of equipment or arranges for outside service and material;�\r\n Maintains cost, production inventory and time records and makes necessary reports on operations;�\r\n Maintains discipline and enforces security measures within assigned areas;�\r\n Maintains appropriate security procedures for tools, equipment, chemicals, etc.;�\r\n Reviews and evaluates performance of assigned inmates;�\r\n Submits reports relative to inmate disciplinary actions, recommendations for 'good time', furloughs, reassignments, etc.;�\r\n May physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist custodial forces in emergencies;�\r\n May be required to operate a motor vehicle;�\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\n

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

\r\n\r\n Considerable knowledge of methods, materials and equipment involved in occupational area;�\r\n Knowledge of methods and techniques of production planning and control;�\r\n Considerable\r\n \r\n interpersonal skills;�\r\n oral communication skills;�\r\n \r\n \r\n Ability to\r\n \r\n interpret plans, blueprints and diagrams where required;�\r\n keep records and make reports;�\r\n perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations;�\r\n train, instruct and supervise inmates in methods and techniques of the trade;�\r\n utilize computer software;�\r\n \r\n \r\n Supervisory ability.\r\n\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in the industry, manufacturing process, services or trade indicated in the occupational parenthetical title of the class.\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

\r\n\r\n Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General Experience on a year for year basis.\r\n Four (4) years of experience in correctional work, two (2) years of which were assigned to full time training in the area indicated in the occupational parenthetical title of the class may be substituted for the General Experience.\r\n\r\n\r\n

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

\r\n\r\n Experience with Heavy Equipment Repair.\r\n Experience with Diesel Repair.\r\n Experience with Electronic Workorder Systems.\r\n Experience training and supervising others.\r\n Experience with Fleet Vehicles and regularly scheduled maintenance.\r\n\r\n\r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class must have reached their 18th birthday.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification at the time of appointment.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to successfully complete a formal training course in correctional work to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the class.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain either a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, a Commercial Driver’s License or both.\r\n Incumbents may be required to travel.\r\n\r\n\r\n

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.\r\n

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.\r\n A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment.\r\n\r\n\r\n

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates who have access to tools of the trade as weapons and the following discomforts depending upon their industry: loud machine noises, chemical fumes, working in tiring positions, working with dangerous (high speed and/or high temperature, etc.) machinery.\r\n
