Join Our Mission to Expand High-Speed Internet

At Fibersmith, we help telecom providers bring high-speed internet to more communities through quality engineering, construction oversight, and field support. Our work helps turn network plans into real-world broadband infrastructure - and we’re looking for dependable, detail-oriented individuals who are ready to learn the field side of fiber construction.

As a Fiber Optics Outside Plant Assistant Inspector, you’ll support active fiber construction projects by working directly in the field alongside contractors, inspectors, resident engineers, and internal design teams. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to build a career in telecommunications construction oversight and gain hands-on experience with fiber placement, splicing, documentation, and field reporting.

This is not a desk job. You’ll be outside, on job sites, learning how fiber networks are built and helping ensure work is completed accurately, safely, and in alignment with project requirements.

Important Travel Requirement

This position requires extensive travel. Work is performed almost entirely at project locations, and applicants should expect to live on the road for the duration of assigned projects. Lodging and travel arrangements are provided according to company policy.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will assist with field inspection activities and learn how to support successful fiber construction projects from the ground up.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with inspection of fiber construction activities, including aerial and underground fiber placement, splicing, and related construction work
  • Supporting the review of construction work to help ensure it follows industry standards, construction maps, and client expectations
  • Updating construction maps with field changes, additions, and materials used in an accurate and timely manner
  • Learning to complete construction documentation, including cup sheets, redlines, daily logs, and other required project records
  • Maintaining project files, records, and reports with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Communicating field issues, progress updates, risks, and opportunities to the Lead Inspector, Resident Engineer, and internal design staff
  • Participating in field meetings with contractors, Fibersmith personnel, clients, or local/government agencies as needed
  • Being present, dependable, and ready to work at assigned job sites
  • Performing other duties as assigned to support project delivery

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is reliable, observant, willing to learn, and comfortable working in the field. You do not need to know everything on day one, but you do need to bring a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a willingness to grow.

Qualifications include:

  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, neatness, and consistency in documentation
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, multitask, and follow established processes
  • Self-directed mindset with the initiative to complete assigned tasks
  • Professional appearance and ability to maintain positive working relationships with contractors, clients, vendors, and co-workers
  • Willingness to learn construction terminology, field practices, equipment, and fiber construction processes
  • Desire to grow and take on additional responsibility as skills develop
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Outlook preferred
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Prior fiber construction, utility construction, field inspection, or related experience is a plus
  • Physical ability to work outdoors in varying weather and job site conditions
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Ability and commitment to travel extensively and live on the road during project assignments

Why This Role Matters

Fiber networks do not get built from drawings alone. Field inspection helps ensure that what is constructed matches the design, meets client expectations, and is documented correctly for future use. As an Assistant Inspector, you’ll play an important support role in helping projects stay organized, accurate, and moving forward.

If you enjoy hands-on work, being outdoors, learning how things are built, and contributing to projects that expand broadband access, this could be a strong fit.
