Imagine the ultimate destination for those who want to work at the cutting edge of technology, energy, and infrastructure. Hut 8 is on a mission to build and operate some of the world’s largest data centers for next-generation computing workloads, including AI, Colocation, Cloud, and Bitcoin Mining. We are proud to offer interesting and challenging opportunities for individuals who want to build teams, solve problems, and make an impact from day one. If you’re an ambitious individual looking for a career that is as rewarding as it is challenging, you’ve come to the right place.

ROLE OVERVIEW

We are looking for a Platform Engineer to serve as the technical owner responsible for the design, operation, and continuous improvement of Hut 8's cloud and infrastructure platforms. This role spans VMware-based IaaS, Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure and OpenStack environments, enterprise backup and recovery, network and firewall operations, and disaster recovery. The successful candidate combines deep multi-platform expertise with strong operational discipline, automation capability, and a customer-focused mindset.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

VMware Public and Private IaaS

  • Design, deploy, and maintain VMware IaaS environments, including vSphere, vCenter Server, ESXi, NSX-T, vSAN, and VMware Cloud Director (VCD).
  • Manage compute, storage, and network resource pools to meet SLA commitments for multi-tenant workloads.
  • Perform capacity planning, performance analysis, and lifecycle management, including patching, upgrades, and firmware management.
  • Automate provisioning, configuration, and compliance using PowerCLI, Terraform, and Ansible.
  • Enforce platform hardening, role-based access control, and security baselines across the VMware stack.

Enterprise SAN Storage Management

  • Administer and manage enterprise all-flash storage arrays such as Pure Storage FlashArray.
  • Provision and manage storage volumes, host groups, volume groups, LUNs, and NFS/CIFS shares for physical and virtual workloads.
  • Optimize storage performance through tiering policies, QoS settings, deduplication, compression, and workload placement.
  • Perform capacity planning and forecasting; generate storage utilization reports and provide growth recommendations to leadership.
  • Manage array-based snapshots, clones, and thin provisioning; integrate snapshot schedules with backup and DR workflows.
  • Execute array firmware upgrades, controller replacements, and drive-shelf expansions following vendor best practices.
  • Coordinate with storage vendors for hardware support, case management, and on-site field engineering activities.
  • Configure and maintain storage integrations with VMware vCenter using VAAI, VASA, and vendor-specific storage plug-ins.

Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure Platform

  • Deploy, operate, and maintain Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure (VHI) clusters, including compute nodes, Virtuozzo Storage, and networking components.
  • Manage Virtuozzo container and VM workloads; enforce multi-tenancy isolation and resource governance across projects and tenants.
  • Troubleshoot Virtuozzo Storage cluster health, replication status, chunk server failures, and performance degradation.
  • Plan and execute Virtuozzo/OpenStack platform upgrades and rolling updates with minimal service disruption.

Network & Firewall Support

  • Manage enterprise firewall platforms (Fortinet FortiGate or Cisco ASA/FTD), including rule lifecycle management, policy audits, and compliance reviews.
  • Support data center routing and switching: BGP, OSPF, VLANs, port channels, and spanning tree protocols.
  • Implement and maintain network segmentation, NSX-T micro-segmentation, and zero-trust access policies.
  • Set up and configure NAT bindings, IPsec, and site-to-site VPNs on the firewall.
  • Maintain up-to-date network topology documentation, firewall rule bases, and change records.

Backup, Disaster Recovery, and Data Protection

  • Architect and oversee Veeam- and Zerto-based backup and DR solutions for both VMware and Virtuozzo/OpenStack environments.
  • Define and implement backup policies, retention schedules, and recovery SLAs (RPO/RTO) aligned to business and customer requirements, and validate them through test restores and periodic DR exercises.
  • Troubleshoot backup failures, including SOBR extent errors, proxy issues, agent failures, and transport mode problems.

Documentation, Enablement, and Collaboration

  • Create and maintain clear documentation, standards, and runbooks for platform services.
  • Provide training and ongoing support to NOC and operations teams, acting as an expert escalation resource.
  • Serve as the senior (L3) escalation point for incidents across IaaS, BaaS, network, and DR domains.

ABOUT YOU

Education and Experience

  • College diploma or university degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, and/or equivalent work experience.
  • Hands-on experience with VMware vSphere, ESXi, and related VMware technologies in production.
  • Experience designing or operating OpenStack or similar open cloud platforms, or strong adjacent experience with modern private cloud stacks and a clear desire to specialize in OpenStack.
  • Experience with Veeam Backup & Replication and Zerto or similar disaster recovery solutions.
  • Experience with storage technologies (SAN, NAS, etc.) and their integration with virtualization and backup platforms.
  • Experience deploying and operating Windows and Linux workloads in virtualized and containerized environments.
  • Hands-on experience with scripting or programming languages for automation, and familiarity with basic database concepts.
  • Strong background in technical support, operations, or SRE-style roles in a team-based environment.

Technical Skills

  • Deep expertise in VMware: vSphere 7/8/VCF 9, vCenter, ESXi, NSX-T, vSAN, and VMware Cloud Director.
  • Solid understanding of network technologies, including VLANs, VXLAN, NSX or similar SDN technologies, routing, switching, and load balancing.
  • Solid network engineering skills: firewall management (Fortinet or Palo Alto preferred), BGP/OSPF, VLANs, and packet-level troubleshooting.
  • Strong experience with enterprise backup platforms — Veeam Backup & Replication is essential; Zerto knowledge is advantageous.
  • Working knowledge of enterprise storage technologies: SAN, NAS, CIFS, NFS, Virtuozzo Storage, or all-flash arrays (Pure Storage, NetApp, or equivalent).
  • Proficiency with infrastructure automation: Terraform, Ansible, PowerShell/PowerCLI, Python, or Bash; experience with infrastructure-as-code tools is a strong asset.
  • Strong grasp of virtualization, cloud, and infrastructure design patterns.
  • Experience with ITIL-aligned change, incident, and problem management processes.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills across compute, storage, and network layers.

Core Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with high attention to detail.
  • Effective at prioritizing and executing tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Strong customer service orientation and a demonstrated willingness to help internal and external stakeholders.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed, with a bias toward ownership and outcomes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Collaborative team player who operates effectively with minimal supervision.
