The Maryland Insurance\r\nAdministration (MIA) is an independent State agency that regulates Maryland’s\r\n$49 billion insurance industry and protects consumers by monitoring and\r\nenforcing insurers’ and insurance professionals’ compliance with State\r\nlaw.� Staff members are subject matter experts who serve as a resource for\r\nlawmakers, consumers, and other public and private entities.�\r\n\r\nThe MIA is charged with a broad range of responsibilities including the\r\nlicensure of insurance carriers and insurance producers (brokers/agents)\r\noperating in Maryland, the conduct of financial examinations of companies to\r\nmonitor financial solvency, and the review and approval of rates and contract\r\nforms.� The MIA investigates reports of consumer fraud and consumer\r\ncomplaints about life, health, automobile, homeowners, and/or property\r\ninsurance.� Insurance carriers are subject to market conduct examinations\r\nand other actions to monitor compliance with Maryland law.� The MIA also\r\nhas a unit dedicated to consumer education and outreach, which participates in\r\nhundreds of events and reaches thousands of individual consumers annually.\r\n�\r\n* This is a Special\r\nAppointment position that serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.\r\n

POSITION DUTIES
The MIA is�recruiting to fill a\r\nComplaints Investigator I position in the Life and Health Division. A Complaints\r\nInvestigator I represents the entry level of work investigating consumer\r\ncomplaints concerning life and health insurance issues, which involves communicating\r\nwith the public in writing and by telephone. Under the supervision of management,\r\nthe Complaints Investigator I conducts an investigation by reading the\r\ncomplaint, identifying the issues, and asking the company written questions.\r\nThe Complaints Investigator I reads and analyzes responses, insurance policies\r\nand documents; applies relevant insurance laws; and recommends a determination\r\nof whether the company has violated the law. If there is no violation, the\r\nComplaints Investigator I explains, to the complainant in writing, the reasons\r\na company did not violate the law. The Complaints Investigator I also answers\r\nincoming calls from consumers and providers, offering them assistance and\r\ndirection with their complaints; and assists with hearing preparation, if\r\nneeded.\r\n�\r\n\r\n\r\nA successful Complaints Investigator I will possess\r\ngood customer service skills and strong verbal and written communication\r\nskills, and will have the ability to read and understand statutes and\r\nregulations, pay attention to details, handle fluctuating caseloads, and meet\r\nstandards for timely handling of complaint files.\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor's\r\ndegree from an accredited four-year college or university.\r\nExperience: None.\r\n�\r\nNote:�\r\n1-�Four years experience in life/health insurance industry as claims\r\nprocessor, underwriter, and investigator or in a related insurance area can\r\nsubstitute for the minimum requirements as stated above.\r\n\r\n\r\n2-�Three (3) years’ experience working within the Maryland Insurance\r\nAdministration or another State’s insurance regulatory agency in a life/health\r\ninsurance capacity as an investigator, examiner, enforcement officer, customer\r\nservice representative or administrative support capacity can be substituted\r\nfor the education requirements.\r\n
