BGC York Region Club serves over 2,500 children and youth in the York Region and surrounding communities to provide social, physical, educational, creative, seasonal, and community support programs. Your role as a Summer Camp Mentor will be to provide a safe and supportive environment for the program participants. This program is designed for children 6-14 years of age. Program components include education, recreation, social activities, sports, health and nutrition, mentoring, and the arts.


Location: Meadowbrook Public School (233 Patterson St, Newmarket, ON L3Y 3L5)

 

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize and lead one on one sessions with a child
  • Ensure that you are creating a safe and enjoyable environment for the participant 
  • Create and facilitate fun, creative and inclusive activities for the participant 
  • Ensure that all equipment and supplies are in safe working condition 
  • Complete appropriate administrative tasks in a timely manner (i.e. attendance)
  • Developing and planning programs that meet the interests of the child and/or youth between the ages of 6 and 14 years.
  • Ensuring programs are safe, age/developmentally-appropriate, non-competitive, inclusive, innovative and skilled-based in nature.
  • Help to ensure the safety and security of the members and assist in responding to critical incidents as outlined in the Club’s policies and procedures 
  • Participate in staff training and orientation sessions 
  • Ensuring the safety and supervision of the participant at all times by strictly following guidelines and procedures (i.e. attendance)
  • Dealing with conflicts and behavior management immediately using corrective techniques as discussed in training
  • Report to, and takes direction from Program Manager and Supervisors 
  • Do other related tasks, as assigned 
  • Maintain professional relationships with peers, members, volunteers, parents and other Club members 
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings 
  • Arrive no later than 15 minutes prior to scheduled shift.


Qualifications:

  • Educational background applicable to the position
  • Must meet all "Canada Summer Jobs" requirements including: 
    • Be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
    • Be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the
      Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*; and
    • Be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
      *International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

  • Experience working with children 6 to 14 years old 
  • Strong skills in one or more of the following areas: sports, arts, swimming, recreation, education, health and nutrition 
  • Strong supervision and program planning skills 
  • Good decision making and problem solving skills 
  • Current First Aid and CPR training (mandatory)
  • Police Reference Check
    (mandatory for ages 18 and up)
  • HIGH FIVE- Principles of Healthy Child Development training (asset)
  • Worked with kids with exceptionalities between 6 to 14 years old

 

Contract Period: July 29, 2026 – August 14, 2026

Must attend mandatory training from June 29-30 and July 2- 3


Hours: 9:00AM - 4:00PM Monday to Friday. Looking for individuals available 5 days a week
