Job Purpose (Overview)

The Harbour School is a community-oriented organization that values its employees and supports continued growth and education of all its staff. We aim to have a work environment that mirrors our school, with staff loving to come in each day just as much as our students love coming to school. Working at THS should be as much of a joy as the learning experiences are, and we aim to inspire future leaders in progressive education.

Teaching at The Harbour School requires teachers to put student learning first, demonstrating excellence in subject-area matter and progressive teaching pedagogy. Teachers are expected to regularly reflect and research up-to-date teaching strategies for continuous improvement, for their own, and students’ benefit.

Teaching at The Harbour School assumes a role beyond the classroom. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to work and communicate collaboratively within a team, assist with the holistic development of students and the school, and be open and willing to undertake duties in addition to their teaching duties.

We are seeking to add to our team and invite applications for passionate Middle School Science Teachers to apply;

Role Overview
As a Middle School Science Teacher at THS, you design and facilitate engaging, integrated learning experiences that help students think like scientists and apply their understanding in the real world. You collaborate closely across our teaching team, co‑plan across disciplines, and serve as a homeroom advisor who supports students’ wellbeing and growth. You bring strong scientific content knowledge, progressive pedagogy, and a commitment to inclusive, student‑centred practice.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design coherent units with clear learning goals and success criteria; use varied assessments to gather evidence, guide instruction, and provide actionable feedback.
  • Provide frequent practical experiences (labs, demos, fieldwork, engineering/design) that emphasize scientific thinking and practices; ensure robust lab safety, including risk assessments.
  • Differentiate instruction and assessment for diverse learners; collaborate with Learning Specialists to plan accommodations, extensions, and targeted support.
  • Co-plan with the teaching team to connect Science with other subjects, projects, and activities; contribute to interdisciplinary exhibitions and community events.
  • Serve as a homeroom/advisory teacher: build community, monitor wellbeing and progress, communicate with families, and coach organization and self-advocacy.
  • Contribute to wider school life (assemblies, clubs, trips, showcases) and undertake reasonable duties that support students and colleagues.
  • Maintain accurate records, meet reporting timelines, communicate professionally with students, families, and staff, and uphold THS safeguarding and health & safety expectations.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education; or
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant science field (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental  Science) with PGCE or equivalent.
  • Relevant subject‑matter teaching experience; 1–3 years with a recognised educational organisation preferred.
  • Experience with Sustainability focused education, Marine Science or Environmental Science preferred.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English (native speaker level).
  • Excellent knowledge of science content and progressive pedagogy, including inquiry‑based and project‑based approaches.
  • Skill in using diverse assessments and applying differentiated strategies for both learning support and extension.
  • Strong technology skills and ability to integrate digital tools meaningfully in learning.
  • Strong organisation, communication, and time‑management skills.
  • Collaborative mindset; willingness to co‑plan and, where appropriate, teach beyond science (e.g., social studies/mathematics).
  • Growth‑oriented, reflective practitioner with a positive, solutions‑focused outlook.
