The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for a Coordinator, Advocacy. Working as a member of the Advocacy and Public Policy department, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy.
This role will recruit, train and coordinate volunteers to take advocacy action and track advocacy opportunities in support of protecting people with lung disease from climate change and poor air quality in Houston, TX. Work collaboratively with nationwide and local Health Promotion and Advocacy staff to incorporate advocacy trainings and recruitment into educational campaigns that address extreme weather events, poor air quality, climate change and lung health. This is a grant-funded position.
- The Lung Association does not currently have an office in Houston, Texas. This position is home-based and job responsibilities will take place in Houston, Texas.
Responsibilities
~2 min read- →In partnership with Health Promotions staff and Manager, Advocacy, cultivate volunteers from patient population, public health and healthcare professionals and other organizations to engage in advocacy supporting actions to address lung disease and climate change.
- →Execute advocacy training opportunities for patient and health professional populations.
- →In coordination with state and nationwide Advocacy and Public Policy staff, propose advocacy opportunities and recruit volunteers to engage.
- →Plan and execute meetings with local decision-makers and volunteer advocates.
- →Help implement assigned grants, ensuring fulfillment of program deliverables, accurate recordkeeping, and proper reporting.
- →Contribute to tracking of grant deliverables, job targets, and milestones capturing project metrics to monitor program success and make program improvements.
- →Participate in and support all area events.
- →Serve on ALA’s regional and national workgroups and committees as requested.
- →Develop and submit timely reports as required by the association and funding sources, including but not limited to weekly updates in the Association’s database, monthly management reports, grant reports, and program metrics reports.
- →Represent the Association as a member of community, civic, and/or health coalitions and organizations related to the Association’s mission.
- →Build, maintain, and cultivate relationships with funders, facilitators, and community partners to encourage program delivery, sustainability, and growth, including ALA signature programs where applicable.
- →Select and participate in local, state, and national seminars and courses designed to increase skills and knowledge related to job requirements.
Requirements
~1 min read- Bachelor’s degree in public health, political science, environmental studies, communications, nonprofit management, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- One to three years of experience in community engagement, advocacy, public health programming, nonprofit programs, volunteer coordination, or related work.
- Experience coordinating projects, events, trainings, or community-based initiatives preferred.
- Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with volunteers, community partners, healthcare professionals, and internal staff.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments, track deliverables, and meet deadlines.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and group facilitation skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Knowledge of or interest in environmental health, lung health, climate change, air quality, or public policy preferred.
- Experience working with diverse communities and community-based organizations preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and internet-based applications required.
- Spanish-language skills preferred.
- Ability to travel within the assigned area approximately 10% of the time and work occasional evenings and weekends as needed for meetings, trainings, and events.
