Research Intern: Lab Management

Position Summary:

Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) is a pioneering marine research institute that addresses critical challenges facing our oceans, human health, and the environment through innovative scientific research and education.

The Laboratory Manager seeks an intern to learn about laboratory safety, operations, and regulatory compliance. The internship position will last 12 weeks. Recent high school graduates and/or high school equivalency may apply. Experience with molecular laboratory techniques, equipment, and operations is a must.

Reports to: Ann Petersen and Reanna McAtee

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform a variety of duties to support GMGI’s research goals with a particular focus on laboratory operations and safety.

·       The intern will be trained to be a part of the team responsible for chemical safety, biosafety and regulatory compliance to maintain records, and keep the lab orderly and in compliance. The intern will support best practices for cell culture, sequencing, and eDNA analysis.

·       The intern will help with lab operation, ordering, inventory.

·       The intern will perform scientific instrument calibration and maintenance, marine animal care and feeding, and general lab management.

·       The intern will learn about the research projects happening at GMGI, and provide support as needed to the operations, instrumentation, and inventory for ongoing projects at the request of the Principle Investigators.

·       Other duties as assigned

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

·       High school degree or equivalency

·       Attention to detail, punctuality, organization, positive attitude, basic Microsoft Word skills, ability to lift up to 20 lbs, aptitude to learn lab management practices.
