Nature and Scope
An EAL Assistant supports students in developing English language skills across speaking, reading, writing, and listening. The role works under the direction of the Director of Student Support Services (SSS) and in collaboration with classroom teachers to provide targeted language support.
This position focuses on reinforcing instruction, supporting small groups, and assisting with language development. The EAL Assistant does not carry full teaching responsibility or lead curriculum delivery.
Professional Responsibilities
Curriculum and Student Support
- Support students identified as requiring English language assistance
- Work with small groups or individual students to reinforce English language development
- Assist classroom teachers in delivering differentiated instruction
- Reinforce lesson content to support comprehension and language acquisition
- Help prepare learning materials and resources for EAL support
- Maintain a supportive and structured learning environment
- Encourage student participation and confidence in using English
Assessment and Monitoring
- Assist in monitoring student progress in English language development
- Provide feedback to teachers and the SSS team on student performance
- Support basic record-keeping related to student progress
- Demonstrate awareness of WIDA levels to support appropriate interventions
Collaboration
- Work closely with classroom teachers and the SSS team
- Participate in meetings and professional discussions as required
- Communicate appropriately with staff regarding student needs
Supervision
- Support supervision of students during class and assigned duties
- Assist in maintaining appropriate student behavior and engagement
- Participate in school activities as required
Professional Development
- Participate in staff meetings and training sessions
- Develop understanding of EAL strategies and student support practices
- Engage in ongoing learning related to English language development
Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (Education or related field preferred)
- Experience working with children or in a school setting preferred
- Understanding of or willingness to learn English language acquisition strategies
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn WIDA framework
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Organized, flexible, and able to follow direction
- Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office)
