The Assistant Utilities Foreman supports the Utilities Foreman in overseeing daily utility construction operations and field personnel. This role helps coordinate crews, equipment, materials, and subcontractors to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in accordance with project specifications. The Assistant Utilities Foreman serves as a working leader who assists with supervision, training, quality control, and safety compliance while preparing for advancement into a Foreman role.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Utilities Foreman in supervising utility construction crews and daily field operations.
  • Coordinate labor, equipment, materials, and resources to support project schedules.
  • Lead assigned crews in the installation, maintenance, and repair of underground and above-ground utility systems.
  • Ensure work is performed safely and in compliance with company policies, OSHA regulations, and project requirements.
  • Conduct toolbox talks and participate in daily safety meetings.
  • Review project plans, specifications, utility maps, and work orders to understand project requirements.
  • Monitor work quality and ensure installations meet project specifications and industry standards.
  • Assist in tracking productivity, labor hours, equipment usage, and project progress.
  • Identify potential safety hazards and immediately address unsafe conditions or behaviors.
  • Coordinate utility locates and support excavation activities in accordance with trenching and excavation safety requirements.
  • Train and mentor crew members on proper work practices, safety procedures, and company expectations.
  • Communicate daily progress, material needs, and project concerns to the Utilities Foreman and project management team.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, timesheets, and project documentation.
  • Assist with equipment inspections and ensure proper maintenance of company vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Serve as acting Foreman when the Utilities Foreman is unavailable.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 3+ years of utility construction experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a crew lead, lead utility worker, or similar role.
  • Working knowledge of underground utility installation, excavation, trenching, and construction practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, utility plans, and project specifications.
  • Familiarity with OSHA safety regulations and safe work practices.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to pass required pre-employment and client-specific screenings.
  • Experience with water, sewer, storm drainage, electrical, telecommunications, or natural gas utility systems.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification.
  • Competent Person Trenching and Excavation Certification.
  • Experience operating construction equipment.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors and multiple work activities.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, bending, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to safely navigate active construction sites and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and travel as project requirements dictate.
  • Strong leadership and team-building capabilities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with craft personnel, subcontractors, and project management.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Understanding of utility construction methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Proficiency in basic computer and mobile technology applications used for reporting and communication.
  • Utility and heavy civil construction job sites.
  • Exposure to construction equipment, noise, dust, excavation activities, and changing weather conditions.
  • Travel between project locations may be required.
