Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to provide\r\nadministrative support to the Disability Unit. The Disability unit is a\r\nhigh-volume unit with the task of properly administering disability benefits.\r\nThe responsibilities include assisting the Medical Board Secretary in\r\nestablishing new claims, preparing claims to be reviewed by the Medical Board\r\nand implementing actions relative to a member's claim for disability retirement\r\nbenefits while the claim is being reviewed and after the process is completed. \r\nAn aspect of the mission of the Agency is to administer\r\nthe disability benefits to System participants. This position is a part of the\r\nadministration of disability benefits, since it is part of the disability\r\nclaims process.\r\nThis position is responsible for reviewing claims to\r\nanalyze and identify if any additional information needs to be requested from\r\nthe claimant, the claimant’s employer, or the claimant’s health care providers.\r\nThis position is also responsible for notifying claimants of decisions made by\r\nthe Medical Board and Board of Trustees regarding the members’ claims. This\r\nposition also assists the Medical Board Secretary in preparing claims for\r\nreview by our Independent Medical Doctors. This requires organization of the\r\nmedical file and communication with the Secretary and/or our physicians.\r\nThis\r\nposition requires a highly organized and detail orientated individual. It\r\nrequires well developed oral and written communication skills. This position is\r\nresponsible for issuing decision letters made by the Medical Board and Board of\r\nTrustees regarding a members disability claim. The position is responsible for\r\nmailing estimates to claimants of their disability retirement benefits. This\r\nposition is responsible for closing claims and ensuring that all communications\r\nare reflected in the file.\r\n

POSITION DUTIES

This position will be responsible for:�\r\n\r\n\r\n•\tReceives and reviews applications for disability retirement in order to determine eligibility to file and completeness of application through the application of retirement law found in the State Personnel and Pensions Article, COMAR regulations and Agency and Board of Trustees’ policies. Prepares completed disability claims for Medical Board review to determine medical condition relative to being disabled under retirement law on a weekly/monthly basis.\r\n•\tCreates and mails disability letters to notify claimants of the Board of Trustees’ decision through tracking of Medical Board’s and Board of Trustees’ decisions. Mails estimates to notify claimants of eligible benefit amounts through tracking of Medical Board’s and Board of Trustee’s decisions as well as track estimates that are needed.\r\n•\tCreates and mails disability closing letters. Purges closed files and sends file to Office Services (after approval from the Disability Unit Supervisor) to be imaged.\r\n•\tPrepares and organizes medical records for review for our Independent Medical Evaluation physicians’.\r\n•\tEnsures that all staff have access to the latest information on Board of Trustees' decisions, mailing of estimates, and receipt of retirement application forms in the Disability Unit by posting information on both the paper disability file (actual claim) and on the case in CRM.\r\n•\tRespond to copy requests from attorneys and/or claimants including calculating the cost of copies and sending copies after receipt of payment\r\n•\tOther duties as assigned by the Director or Deputy Director of Special Projects.\r\n\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:�� Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. \r\nExperience:�One year of administrative staff or professional work. \r\nNotes:\r\n1. Candidates may substitute 30�college credit hours from an accredited college or university for�the required experience.\r\n2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included�regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required�experience. \r\n

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Please note that your answers to the supplemental\r\nquestionnaire must correspond to the information provided on your application\r\nto receive credit.\r\nPreferred candidates will possess the following qualifications:�\r\n•\tOne year of demonstrated experience working with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.\r\n•\tOne year of experience reviewing and processing incoming applications, including eligibility for benefits (e.g. retirement, insurance, health, etc.).� � � �\r\n•\tOne year of previous experience in the medical or legal fields evaluating workers’ compensation, personal injury claims, insurance, or medical malpractice claims.\r\n

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.\r\n
