The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Interns must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience. 

 
In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

 
a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
c) are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.
e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

 

Under the overall supervision of Head of Office for IOM Finland, the direct supervision of the Senior Project coordinator and in coordination with relevant units, the intern will support the country office and more specifically the Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) Unit in the update of the website Moving to Finland, research support for beneficiary inquiries, and supporting PDOrelated tasks. The internship offers exposure to IOM’s Pre-Departure orientation programmes and resettlement operations in a multicultural environment.

  1. Assist in reviewing the Moving to Finland website information for clarity, correctness, and user-friendliness. 
  2. Prepare edits that are in alignment with AI text to audio tool requirements for team review and finalize versions incorporating changes as needed. 
  3. Support in planning and drafting new sections as needed.
  4. Assist in planning and coordinating translation and quality control timelines and workflow steps. 
  5. Update the website with new text versions and corresponding audio files. 
  6. Check overall functionality of the website after update. 
  7. Support communication tasks related to PDO events such as assisting with social media content preparation. 
  8. Assist in researching answers to participants' questions before and during PDO. 
  9. Provide general administrative support to the team as needed. 
  10. Perform other duties as required.

 

Training components and learning elements

The Intern will gain experience in working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations system.

  • Gain experience in content creation and website management to support early integration of refugees. 

  • Gain experience in planning, implementing and coordinating a sub-project within a project.

  • Gain experience of Pre-Departure Orientation for quota refugees. 

  • Gain experience in social media communication. 

  • Gain a better understanding of IOM’s work, as an inter-governmental organization in the field of Migration, and IOM’s resettlement operations. 

  • The Intern can also access online training courses at the disposal of all IOM staff.

 

Requirements

  • This internship is well suited for master’s students in fields such as Communication & Media, Social Sciences, Political Sciences and Educational Sciences

 

  • Experience in research, fact‑checking information and verifying sources.
  • Experience in writing, editing and adapting texts for different platforms with attention to clarity, accuracy and accessibility. 
  • Experience with digital tools supporting web and content management, including Content Management Service tools (e.g. Drupal) and AI tools, is an advantage. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Prior experience in international or multicultural settings is an advantage.

 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Skilled at organizing and summarizing findings concisely.

  • Excellent communication skills, especially in writing. 

  • Attention to detail combined with a systematic and organized approach. 

  • User-friendly and learner-centered approach in developing accessible content. 

  • Ability to work effectively in a team and independently.

  • Discretion and client-oriented approach.

  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new systems. 

  • Basic skills in photography, videography and social media content preparation.

     

 

For this internship, fluency in English and either Finnish or Swedish is required 

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Responsibilities

Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by their university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.

IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the internship. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
