Pay Rate: $14/hour
SUMMARY
The Food Service Worker - School Nutrition is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, high-quality meals for students in a safe, sanitary, and efficient manner in accordance with Whitsons’ standards and all applicable USDA, state, and local food safety and program requirements. This role supports daily meal service across the hot lunch and breakfast lines — handling food preparation, portioning, temperature monitoring, sanitation, and dishwashing to ensure meals are ready on time and meet program standards. A positive, professional attitude, a commitment to food safety, and the ability to work effectively as part of a school nutrition team are fundamental expectations of this role.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND DUTIES
Food Preparation, Service & Station Operations
- Prepare and serve food according to approved menus and in correct portion sizes as mandated by yield guides and USDA NSLP and SBP meal pattern requirements; ensure all meals meet nutritional and portioning compliance standards for the appropriate age group; brew coffee, fill beverage machines, and set up hot and/or cold food service areas prior to meal service as required.
- Perform temperature checks during the meal service period to verify food is being held and served at the correct temperature; record all results accurately in the temperature log; check and store all incoming food and supply deliveries in designated areas following FIFO procedures; stock sufficient supplies at your station to last the entire service day.
- Perform basic food preparation and limited cooking or heating tasks as needed or assigned, including traying, heating, baking, and removing prepared food items from ovens or warmers while following all food safety, temperature, portioning, and handling procedures.
- Deliver food to classrooms, satellite schools, staff areas, and catering events as needed; manage POS and cash handling responsibilities if assigned to the position, following all Whitsons cash handling procedures accurately and honestly; set up attractive display plates and ensure menu signage at each station is neat, clean, colorful, and complete.
Sanitation, Safety, Compliance & Team Responsibilities
- Perform all assigned cleaning duties including sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning of kitchen equipment and work areas, dishwashing, and pot washing; collect and strip trays for dishwashing and participate in ware washing when assigned; store silverware, dishes, glasses, cups, pots, and other items in their designated locations after cleaning.
- Follow all sanitation requirements as prescribed by the General Manager and in compliance with state, federal, and local safe food handling regulations; assist in the implementation and follow-up of the kitchen sanitation cleaning schedule for all kitchen areas and equipment; maintain a clean and sanitary work area at all times — clean as you go throughout every shift.
- Comply with all USDA, state, and local food handling certification requirements and all client location security protocols and guidelines; follow all Whitsons policies and procedures and assigned break schedules at all times; participate in the safety committee and attend all mandatory in-service programs; perform all other duties as assigned in support of the school nutrition program.
- Follow all workplace safety practices and company safety initiatives, including proper lifting techniques, safe use of kitchen equipment, knife safety, chemical safety, PPE requirements, slip/trip/fall prevention, and clean-as-you-go expectations; promptly report unsafe conditions, hazards, injuries, or near-miss incidents to the PIC, Chef Manager, General Manager, or other designated supervisor.
